This year I decided to try something different. As always I based my choice on "INSPIRATION"!!! :)
This is how I came to be paired with the sweet and patient [livejournal.com profile] t_eyla who allowed me pretty much free reign on
all my wacky and flip floppy ideas and I ventured out of my box to art for a sweet high school trope, a Dean/Cas fic called
Hamburger Is Not A German Word.

I quickly envisioned a mixed media approach and knew it would work well with color and lend itself to fun and creativity.
My author was very patient with me thankfully, you all know of course that I have a sweet new baby girl at home
and am just getting used to motherhood again. It doesn't lend itself to alot of ME time to say the least.

In the end I started thinking about a shadow box, kind of a 3D travel postcard. It was fun. I used an
antique map of the German city Freising to help with the buildings, cut everything out of watercolor paper and
painted it, pencils, markers, school glue, hot glue, string, tape....all the usual suspects for an elementary
school childs project :)))) I cut up a little glittery hat from a bachelorette party to make the fireworks (yes, those are fireworks)
and tried assorted lighting techniques with mini mag lights.

bb1

I would like to thank [livejournal.com profile] beelikej for all her fabulous papercutting and lighting she does, I'm sure it inspired me, my patient patient trusting
writer [livejournal.com profile] t_eyla who is trusting me blind and has pretty much NO idea what this art looks like, she wrote a sweet and touching HAPPY fic that really gives the feeling of being in another country (Germany) , you all will love it........ and the irreplacable [livejournal.com profile] wendy whom none
of us could live without!!!!!!

also my wife and son who are so paitent and understanding when I'm putting our lives on hold to "play" and making me dinner and snacks
and holding the flashlights, couldn't do it without them.

Aaaah! That is super, super cool. :3 Thank you so much!

I adore the 3D effect, and how you managed to keep the postcard feel, since it references all the traveling Dean and Cas do in the fic.

And it absolutely looks like Freising! The colors and the architecture, mountains, hills ... even the little church. You really managed to capture the spirit of the area, which is amazing.

And of course Dean and Cas snuggling. That's always nice to look at.

Thank you so much for creating something so fitting and wonderful in the little time you had. I wish you and your family best of luck for the future!

awwwwww, I'm so glad you like it. I'm sure you are the only author who has NO IDEA whatsoever what her art will look like until it's been posted. Thanks for not freaking out over that aspect. I know it takes alot of trust. Google came thru with that map of Freising that shaped the tone of the whole thing with the little buldings and churches, darling. Also the outside of the postcard is supposed to be German flag colors, I think it got lost in translation, looks a bit pink instead of red, oh well. Figure drawing isn't my strength that's for sure but I thought the sketchy aspect kind of worked. It was super fun to work on and I try to remember that that's what counts!!!! Fandom is supposed to be fun.

I hope EVERYONE runs to read your fic, it really is super!!!!

I recognized the flag colors! I think it's reddish enough to come through.

I actually sort of liked the surprise aspect, so there you go. ;) I'd seen your other stuff, so I knew you'd come up with something good.

Google is amazing for this sort of thing; it's helped me tons to get the feel of a place I've never been to.

I posted to the AO3 right here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/7532254/chapters/17123791 Please let me know if you're cool with the image being embedded in the fic there.

This is awesome!!!! I've never seen mixed media art done for a fic and I absolutely love it! It looks great! So cute and, even though I haven't read the fic yet, really makes me want to even more. Thank you for sharing the process too! I can't art to save my life but I love to read and learn about other artist's methods!

thank you, this is my 4th?? year doing mixed media, I've done lots of embroidery and them some fabric collage, this is my first shadowbox. I don't really consider myself an artist, I think I'm so spoiled by this amazing fandom so it led to just going crazy with the weird stuff I do well. ....like cross stich, crochet, putting glitter on things LOL

Oh, this is darling. I love the soft watercolour colours and that burger is so cool! Great depth with all the layers, it really adds something special to the composition:) Same goes for the use of different styles: drawing Dean and Castiel with marker makes them pop! (And the black handlettering then pulls everything together)
I saw you explain how the frame is the German flag -taking photos is really yet another medium to experiment with;)- and I enjoyed reading about you putting things together.
Very happy I could inspire you, but all the credit to you for expanding the BB arts & crafts experience:)

.....so I think I got away with the cheat of digital lettering part of it??? I handlettered the Title but then cheated the rest. \O/ sometimes the best art is FINISHED art :)
AND you DO inspire me!!! I almost sent you a panicked message over the lighting but cutting holes in top and shining flashlights thru worked pretty well.

Hehehehe, I totally guessed the names were digitally added, but that doesn't matter if it looks the way you want it to look (but yeah, I too acuse myself of "cheating" when it's really the result that matters;)

I take so many photos; layers, light and shadows are hellish to control. Same thing as above applies though: whatever works to make it look the way you intended is cool (and sometimes you get happily surprised by what an accidental light adds to the artwork:)
