On my ideal fanfic shelf I would definitely put In Becoming Who We Are (http://storiesimakeup.livejournal.com/25619.html) by

errant_jane (formerly known as Elizah_Jane). It starts out with my OTP Jeff/Jensen and ends with Jensen/Jared and I don't even mind, because it feels so real and right;) There are a couple of familiar faces (including one of my favorite Mishas) and original characters, but the focus is on Jensen from the moment he is out of college to finally finding his place in life. There is comfort, there is angst: it's the perfect fanfic.

40 seems like a nice target (also depends on how big you want to make this thing;) Even if it's all one author that doesn't matter (I'm obsessed with Margaret Atwood books and just love to see my whole collection together, I'm a sucker for sets:)
